On August 7, 1782, General George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit, which later came to be known as the Purple Heart medal.
The Purple Heart has been awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been wounded, killed, or passed away as a result of injuries sustained in combat.
It is one of the oldest and most respected medals throughout the ranks of the American military.
